ALTES WISSEN - Johannes de Sacrobosco
In his
Tractatus de Sphaera
, Johannes de Sacrobosco (1195–1256) provided a fundamental connection between the microcosm and the macrocosm. Like Aristotle’s
Meteorology
and Claudius Ptolemy’s
Almagest
, this work gave medieval authors a basis for arguing that stones formed under the influence of celestial bodies.
ALTES WISSEN - Marbod von Rennes
According to current scholarship, the widely read French bishop Marbod of Rennes (AD 1035–1123) made an important contribution to the spread of ideas about healing stones through his
Liber lapidum
, based on a Latin version of Damigeron’s
De lapidibus
. Together with the works of Thomas of Cantimpré, Konrad of Megenberg and Isidore of Seville, it is counted among the most important and widely received medieval encyclopaedic works.
ALTES WISSEN - Alchemistisches Lexikon des Martin Rulandus
Modern esotericism, strongly influenced by the Hermetic teachings of the Golden Dawn, drew in particular on an English translation specially prepared by Arthur E. Waite (AD 1857–1942) of the alchemical dictionary by Martin Ruland (AD 1569–1611), published posthumously in 1612. Alongside numerous basic alchemical principles, the dictionary describes effects attributed to many stones.
ALTES WISSEN - Das Rätsel des Urspungs der Heilsteine
According to numerous researchers, trade routes and writings on healing stones and gemstones suggest that the idea of stones possessing internal powers originated in the East, from Persian sources. The surviving work
De lapidibus
, attributed to the historically unverified King Evax of Arabia and said to have been sent to Emperor Tiberius, is cited as evidence. Other Arabic sources are also used to support this view. Finds of rune stones, stone monuments and stone jewellery, however, indicate that a well-developed stone tradition existed independently in Europe as well.
