ALTES WISSEN - Sonne, Mond und die fünf Planeten der Antike
While gemstones today are often associated with eight planets plus the Sun and Moon, making ten celestial bodies, ancient and medieval systems associated them with only five planets plus the Sun and Moon, making seven. This reflects the celestial bodies known at the time: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are the five planets visible to the naked eye in the night sky. The division of the week is also connected with this system.
RENAISSANCE - Geburt der Schleiftechnik
Many of the gemstone cuts familiar today developed around the 15th century AD. In antiquity, rough stones were generally polished and then set. During the Renaissance, the skill of using the appropriate cut to bring out a gemstone’s refraction and optical qualities became increasingly sophisticated.
ALTES WISSEN - Prinzip der Grundfarben
Black, white, yellow, crimson, purple, green and dark blue were the basic colours described by Aristotle in his
Parva naturalia
and passed down to the Middle Ages. Gemstones were classified and assigned to planets according to these colours. The work of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, particularly his
Theory of Colours
, later reworked this universal medieval system into its present form.
ÜBERLIEFERUNG - Thomas Nicols
In his book published in AD 1659, Thomas Nicols examines whether gemstones can have effects, and what kinds of effects might be possible, before listing the principal stones of his time. Unlike many other authors, he provides not only Greek names but, in some cases, Hebrew names for the various stones.
