Moonstone has long been regarded as one of the most important stones in crystal-healing traditions. In On Stones, Theophrastus is said to describe its use in assisting childbirth, a belief passed down through folk tradition. In antiquity, the stone was placed on the abdomen of women approaching childbirth or in labour because it was believed to promote contractions.

Today, rock crystal chips are often used to charge stones and hematite chips to discharge them. This practice is based on colour theory, which associates white, represented by rock crystal, with a high degree of light reflection and thus energy, and black, represented by hematite, with a high degree of light absorption and thus energy. Another traditional method is to discharge stones under running water and recharge them in sunlight or moonlight. In the Middle Ages, special rituals were commonly used to recharge stones.

Building on ancient knowledge, medieval traditions developed specific ideas about the best ways to shape, cut and engrave stones, or particular types of stone, to enhance their attributed effects, colour or lustre. Before grinding and polishing techniques became available, stones were primarily incised or painted with written symbols, just as was done with beechwood sticks. The German word for letters, Buchstaben, is associated with this practice. The gemstone cuts familiar today began to emerge in the early 15th century.
